Professional Teaching Standards

This page showcases the AITSL graduate teacher standards (AITSL, 2022). These consist of 6 mandatory teaching standards that grow with the educator as they transition through their career. AITSL Graduate Teacher Standards

The AITSL standards (AITSL, 2022) are incredibly important as they provide a clear framework for quality teaching and professional growth. These standards serve as both a goal and a guideline to help educators achieve excellence in their teaching practices.

Standards 1-2:

Professional Knowledge

Standard 1: Know students and how they learn Standard 2: Know the content and how to teach it
Understand how the differences in students affects their ability to learn and comprehend Competent knowledge in content and what to teach
Differentiation and mixed abilities Literacy, numeracy and ICT strategies implemented

Standards 3-5: Professional Practice

Standard 3: Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning Standard 4: Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments Standard 5: Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning
Establish, plan and implement learning strategies and goals Thorough management of classroom environment to support student participation and safety Assess student learning and provide appropriate feedback based on data
Select and use resources to support effective classroom management Manage challenging classroom behaviour and activities Report effectively on student improvement and achievement
Engage external stakeholders in the educative process i.e parents/carers Use and implement ICT to an appropriate level Implement a variety of assessment forms, including formative, summative, informal and formal

Standards 6-7: Professional Engagement 

Standard 6: Engage in professional learning Standard 7: Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
Consistently engage in professional learning to improve practice Meet key principles of the code of ethics and teaching profession, including legislative, administrative and organisational
Engage with colleagues effectively Work effectively with parents/carers to an appropriate level through appropriate means
Apply new knowledge and skills to improve student learning Engage in the external teaching community in a professional manner
